This fish plaque was made by pressing into the clay the carved lino sheet left over from making my lino-cut fish prints. I then hand coloured them and added detail by scratching out patterns (sgraffito).
These plaques are quite time consuming to make as the pattern has to be carved out very carefully and filled with crushed glass so that it will hold the molten glass during firing without it overflowing.
Here I have tried to add more textural variation by choosing to combine a matt with a shiny glaze.
Made on commission. My brief was to include a hare and the number 41 into a house number plaque.
A more surreal take on my usual fish themed plaques.
I have produced and sold quite a few of these fish plaques. They are created completely from my imagination without any prior sketches.
Stoneware with slips, oxide and glazes.
